Is your first memory even real?

Why you can't completely trust your memories.

You know, it’s actually comical how cliché this question has become: ‘‘What’s your earliest memory?”. Most people are oblivious to the fact that memories are notoriously unreliable. That’s 40% of people. Chances are you’re one of them.

Modern day research indicates that first memories are formed around 3 to 3.5 years of age, but another study states that almost 40% of participants claim that their earliest memory is from 2 years or younger.

The part I found really interesting was why? It’s because our brains love making up fantasies and complete bull$hit. It’s not harmful though, so don’t worry.

Personally, I believe that my first memory was when I was a one year old. It was one of me being lifted into the air by a cousin of mine in the attic of my house. Every time I look back at it, it boosts me with hope and optimism. To be honest, I don’t even care if it’s true or not, I reminisce about it because it lights me up inside. Think about your 'first' memory right now and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

So now you’re probably wondering: "How do I know if my memory is true?" Find some sort of evidence, like a journal entry or a video, or if you’re older than time itself , a black and white picture. Just ask your parents or something.

In summary, just keep in mind that not everything we recollect is 100% accurate, however, don’t let this stop you from having a few laughs. I make up a few stories here and there myself, just to create an interesting incident. I should probably be a script writer for a film🤷‍♀️
